World Tsunami Day 2023

Every year on November 5, World Tsunami Awareness Day is commemorated. Japan is recognized as the driving force behind this observance due to its enduring experience with devastating tsunamis. Over the years, Japan has garnered substantial expertise in crucial areas such as tsunami early warning systems, public preparedness and response, and the post-disaster reconstruction efforts aimed at mitigating future impacts. Here are there details on the World Tsunami Day 2023.

World Tsunami Day 2023: History

On December 22, 2015, the United Nations officially designated November 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day, as outlined in resolution 70/23. Tsunamis, though infrequent, rank among the most devastating and perilous natural disasters. Over the past century, 58 tsunamis have tragically claimed the lives of more than 260,000 individuals, surpassing the toll of any other natural catastrophe. The most catastrophic of these events occurred in December 2004, when the Indian Ocean tsunami struck, resulting in the loss of 227,000 lives across 14 countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. Remarkably, a mere three weeks after this devastating event, the international community convened in Kobe, Japan, to adopt the 10-year Hyogo Framework for Action, marking a historic milestone as the first comprehensive global agreement on disaster risk reduction.
