1. Ministry of Tourism Organized 6-day Mega event “Bharat Parv” at Red Fort Lawns

  • The six-day mega event “Bharat Parv” Event is to be organized by the Government of India at the Lawns and Gyan Path in front of Red Fort, Delhi from 26th to 31st January 2023, as part of the Republic Day Celebrations. “Bharat Parv” is under the Ministry of Tourism and has been designated as the nodal Ministry for the event.
  • The highlights of which will include showcasing of the best Republic Day Parade tableaux at the venue, cultural performances by the Zonal Cultural Centres as well as cultural troupes from States/ UTs, a pan – India Food Court, and a pan – India Crafts Bazaar with 65 handicraft stalls.

2. Jal Jeevan Mission Provides Tap Water to 11 Crore Rural Households

  • Over 11 Crore rural households in the country have access to tap water connections as India celebrates its 74th Republic Day. 123 districts and more than 1.53 lakh villages of India have reported ‘Har Ghar Jal’ which means every household has access to clean drinking water through the tap.
  • Jal Jeevan Mission was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th August 2019 to provide every rural household with a tap water connection by 2024.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the achievement of 11 Crore Tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
  • PM Modi also congratulated all those who have benefitted from this initiative and complemented those working on the ground to make this Mission a success.

3. PepsiCo Foundation and CARE launches ‘She Feeds the World’ programme

  • PepsiCo Foundation, the philanthropic arm of PepsiCo and CARE, have launched ‘She Feeds the World’ program in India to strengthen the role of small-scale women producers through sustainable training and economic support.
  • The program, which will be implemented in the Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts of West Bengal, aims to reach out to more than 48,000 women, men and children and indirectly benefit 1,50,000 individuals.
  • Under this initiative, PepsiCo has trained close to 1,500 women farmers in West Bengal on potato agronomy and other skills. It is expected that the program will impact more than 3,00,000 women through direct and community engagement.

4. Third Edition of Annual Orange Festival 2023 Celebrated in Nagaland

  • The third edition of the two-day Orange Festival has been organized in Nagaland’s Rusoma village to mark the harvest of organic oranges in the district.
  • The orange festival was held from 24th to 25th January 2023. The orange festival is held to display the harvested oranges from the village.
  • The Orange Festival was inaugurated by K. Neibu Sekhose, the Additional Director of the Department of Rural Development in Nagaland.
  • The Rusoma village is situated about 8 kilometers from the state’s capital and cultivates pure organic oranges.
  • K. Neibu Sekhose, informed that the orange harvest was less this year owing to the change in Climate conditions.
  • The Rusoma village is blessed with fertile soil, and it is best for the cultivation of oranges.

International News

5. Senior ISIS Leader Bilal al-Sudani killed in US Raid in Somalia

  • A US Military raid in Somalia killed a key regional leader of the Islamic State group, Bilal al-Sudani. The US Military raid was ordered by President Joe Biden. Bilal al Sudani was killed during a gunfight after US troops descended on a mountainous cave complex in northern Somalia hoping to capture him. Around 10 of Sudani’s Islamic State associates at the scene were killed, but there were no American casualties.
  • On 25th January 2023, the US military conducted an assault operation in northern Somalia ordered by the president that resulted in the death of several ISIS members, including Bilal al-Sudani.
  • Al-Sudani was responsible for fostering the growing presence of ISIS in Africa and for funding the group’s operations worldwide, including in Afghanistan.

6. Naresh Lalwani takes charge as General Manager of Central Railway

  • Naresh Lalwani has taken over as the new General Manager of Central Railway. He is a senior officer of the Indian Railway Engineering Service of 1985 batch.
  • Before taking over as General Manager, Central Railway, he was working as Senior Deputy General Manager and Chief Vigilance Officer of Western Railway. He succeeds Ashok Kumar Misra, General Manager Western Railway who was holding the additional charge of Central Railway as well.
  • Prior to taking over as General Manager, Central Railway, he was serving as Senior Deputy General Manager and Chief Vigilance Officer, Western Railway.

7. Indian Stock Markets Migrating to T+1 Settlement Cycle

  • India will become the first major economy to move to a T+1(trade plus one) market settlement cycle when it finally makes the transition on  January 27.
  • The Chinese market is currently partly T+1. With the move, all stock settlements will be done the next day, making financial transactions faster in the stock market.
  • Currently the market follows a T+2 settlement cycle, which means the investors receive shares or dividends as well as bonus shares in their accounts within two days after the transaction.

8. India & Japan concludes “Veer Guardian 2023” Air exercise

  • The inaugural edition of the 16-day bilateral air exercise between the Indian Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defence Force has concluded in Japan. The exercise, ‘Veer Guardian 2023’, involved precise planning and skilful execution by both the air forces.
  • The JASDF participated in the exercise with its F-2 and F-15 aircraft, while the IAF contingent participated with the Su-30 MKI aircraft. The IAF fighter contingent was complemented by one IL-78 flight refuelling aircraft and two C-17 Globemaster strategic airlift transport aircraft.

9. NITI Aayog’s AIM, CBSE, and Intel India Collaborate to Bring Change in Education Sector

  • Atal Innovation Mission – NITI Aayog, Central Board of Secondary Education -Ministry of Education, and Intel India have collaborated to bring a change in the education sector by embedding future skills such as AI and Tinkering in the formal curriculum.
  • The larger aim is to align the NEP 2020’s guidance to increase the pace of tech integration for youth, the need to bridge the future skills gap in the country, and optimize the current infrastructure (ATLs, etc.) towards making India AI-ready. Together, they launched the AIoT Integration in School Curriculum in September 2022 and initiated a pilot.

10. iNNCOVACC – India’s first intranasal Covid vaccine launched

iNNCOVACC - India’s first intranasal Covid vaccine

  • The first nasal vaccination produced in India against Covid-19, the iNCOVACC, was introduced by Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh and Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya. Bharat Biotech has created the vaccine. At Mandaviya’s house, the first intranasal vaccine produced in India was introduced to the world.
  • Bharat Biotech has previously declared that it will offer the intranasal vaccine for 325 for government purchases and 800 for private immunisation facilities.
  • Bharat Biotech recently declared iNCOVACC® (BBV154) to be a booster dose throughout the nation.
  • The effectiveness of iNCOVACC as a primary dosage schedule and a heterologous booster dose for patients who have already received two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin were assessed in clinical trials.

11. EPFO launches ‘Nidhi Aapke Nikat’ massive outreach programme

  • Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched a massive district outreach program in all the districts of the country through a revamped Nidhi Aapke Nikat program. The aim of this program is to reach all the districts of the country on the same day i.e. 27th of every month. EPFO organized camps in 685 districts of the country.
  • In the year 2015, Bhavishya Nidhi Adalat was rechristened as Nidhi Aapke Nikat and in the year 2019, the outreach of the Nidhi Aapke Nikat Program was further improved by inviting participation of trade unions. In the year 2021, for grievances redressal of pensioners, an exclusive platform monthly Pension Adalat was initiated.
  • The Nidhi Aapke Nikat 2.0 will not be only grievance redressal platform and information exchange network for the employers and the employees but also a platform for exchange of information with the district level authorities of various State and Central Government departments.

12. Hindenburg Report Drags Gautam Adani down from 3rd to 7th position on Forbes’ rich list

  • The Hindenburg report has named Gautam Adani along with his family members in what it has called the biggest fraud in corporate history. The report triggered off strongly worded responses from the Adani Group, where it called Hindenburg’s findings stale and its claims malicious.
  • But that hasn’t helped market sentiment around Adani’s stock, as it has crashed by 20 per cent so far, and has also wiped off more than Rs 80,000 crore from the firm’s market cap.
  • After his meteoric rise to the position of the world’s third wealthiest man, Gautam Adani has been dragged down to the seventh position on Forbes’ rich list by Hindenburg’s damning report. The serious claims have triggered off a storm as Indian index Sensex opened 1,000 points lower, and market regulator SEBI increased scrutiny against the Adani Group.
  • As of now Bernard Arnault of Louis Vuitton is the world’s richest man, pushing Elon Musk to the second position, followed by Jeff Bezos and Oracle founder Larry Ellison. Adani on the other hand was surpassed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, on the list.

13. European Space Mission JUICE to be Launched in April 2023

  • The European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer or JUICE is the next venture of humanity into the outer Solar System. It will be conducted thorough examinations of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and its three moons with oceans including Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa.
  • The spacecraft has just completed its final tests before departing Toulouse, France, for Europe’s Spaceport to count down to on April 2023 launch.
  • The plaque was unveiled at Airbus Toulouse on 20 January and it displays images of Galileo Galilei’s initial observations of Jupiter and its moons from a copy of the Sidereus Nuncius hosted in the library of the Astronomical and Copernican Museum.
  • The JUICE will be launched from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou on an Ariane 5 rocket in April 2023.
  • It will then embark on an eight-year journey, which includes flybys of Earth and Venus to gain momentum for its trip to Jupiter. Once it reaches the gas giant, it will make 35 flybys of its three largest moons before shifting its orbit to Ganymede.
