Till then World Peace Day was commemorated on the inaugural session of the UN General Assembly. Every year the inaugural session of UN General Assembly is held on the third Tuesday of September.

In 1954, The United Nations Association of Japan granted the Peace Bell. The Peace Bell is rung twice in a year once on the Vernal Equinox, the first day of spring and the other at 21st September on the occasion of World Peace Day. The ringing of Peace Bell is followed as a tradition.
