National Doctor’s Day 2022:  National Doctor’s Day is celebrated every year on July 1 to acknowledge the important role played by the Doctors in our society. National Doctor’s Day 2022: History

To honor the contributions of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray, National Doctor’s Day was first celebrated on 01st July 1991 by the Indian Medical Association(IMA). Dr. BC Roy was born on July 1, 1882 and his death anniversary also falls on the same date in 1962. He was an eminent Physician, an educationist, social worker, politician, and freedom fighter. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy  served as the second Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 till his death. The highest Civilian Award, the Bharat Ratna was conferred to Dr. BC Roy on 04th February 1961. Dr. B C Roy worked as Personal Physician of Mahatma Gandhi.

In his Medical career he brought enormous contributions for the health sector. Dr. B C Roy provided a helping hand for the establishment of these Medical Institutions, Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital and the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. To pay tribute to Dr. B C Roy, the Indian Medical Institution(IMA) started the B C Roy National Award in 1976. Every year on the occasion of National Doctor’s Day, the President of India presents this award to the people who have immense contribution in the field of science, medicine, arts, literature, philosophy, and public affairs.

National Doctor’s Day 2022: Significance

National Doctor’s Day is celebrated to highlight the vital role played by the Doctors. Doctors work with full devotion to ensure the well being of their patients. In the COVID-19 Pandemic, Doctors sacrificed their own life to save the life of the people. Many of the doctors also lost their lives while providing treatment to the patients. During the conditions of pandemics and Medical Emergencies the doctors are the ones who serve the humanity.

There are many doctors who impart free service to the needy and underprivileged ones. Sometimes people show anger and hatred towards the doctors but even then they keep on doing their noble work. On the occasion of National Doctor’s Day we should be grateful to these warriors for their service and tireless efforts. On National Doctor’s Day events and campaigns are organized to spread awareness about the importance of doctors in our community.
