World Breastfeeding Week 2022: Every year from 1st to 7th August, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in more than 120 countries. World Breastfeeding Week is observed to create awareness of the importance of regular breastfeeding for infants. For babies, breastfeeding is very important as it helps in their healthy growth and development. The World Health Organization(WHO) has reported that mothers who breast feed their child have less chances of breast & ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes and heart diseases. World Breastfeeding Day make the people conscious that it is compulsory for the mothers to breastfeed their infants for the first six months post birth and then they can increase the duration to one year or more. In 1990 a memorandum to support and encourage breastfeeding was designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). As per the memorandum The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was established on 14th February 1991. WABA, WHO, and UNICEF came together for the first time in 1991 with a motto that every new born must be breast fed for the first six months of his/her life. The first World Breastfeeding Week was observed in 1992 and the campaign was promoted. At starting only 70 countries celebrated the World Breastfeeding Week and now the number has risen to 170.

World Breastfeeding Week 2022: Significance

World Breastfeeding Week is commemorated to aware people the advantages of breastfeeding. Many mothers do not breastfeed their child because they think of their fitness and maintaining the body shape. Breastfeeding is not only beneficial for the infant but also for the mother. Doctors recommend the mothers to breastfeed their newborn baby for 6 months after birth. Mother’s Milk has many health benefits, provide the essential nutrients, and protect the babies from deadly diseases. The antibodies present in the breast milk boost the immunity of the infants and make them fight against germs and viruses. The antibodies also help in preventing many paediatric ailments. Babies who are breastfed have lower chances of developing infections, asthma, and allergies. World Breastfeeding Day also highlights on the rights of women to breastfeed their babies anywhere and at anytime.

The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2022 is “Step up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support”. World Breastfeeding Week’s theme mainly highlights that certain measures are need to be taken by the organizations to promote breastfeeding as it is beneficial in the early development of a child.
