The SBI PO Psychometric Test 2026 is a part of the Phase III selection process for candidates shortlisted after the SBI PO Mains examination. It helps assess a candidate’s personality, behavioural tendencies, and approach to workplace situations. Unlike a knowledge-based examination, this assessment focuses on how candidates think, respond to challenges, interact with others, and handle responsibilities. Understanding the Big 5 Personality Model can help candidates become familiar with the traits commonly discussed in personality assessments and prepare for the expectations of a Probationary Officer.
Decode Your Personality Type
The Big 5 Personality Model is a widely used framework for understanding personality through five broad traits. Every individual demonstrates these traits to different degrees. The model provides a useful way to understand behavioural tendencies and how they may relate to professional situations.
The five traits are:
Openness to Experience
Conscientiousness
Extraversion
Agreeableness
Emotional Stability, commonly discussed in relation to Neuroticism
1. Openness to Experience
Openness to Experience reflects curiosity, willingness to learn, and readiness to consider new ideas. In the banking sector, officers must adapt to changing procedures, digital banking services, new technologies, and updated regulatory requirements. A candidate who is comfortable learning new processes may find it easier to adjust to changing workplace expectations.
Example: When introduced to a new banking system, an officer takes the initiative to understand its features and learn how to use it effectively rather than resisting the change.
2. Conscientiousness
Conscientiousness refers to being organised, disciplined, careful, and dependable. This trait is particularly relevant to banking because officers handle financial transactions, customer information, documentation, and time-sensitive responsibilities. A conscientious employee pays attention to details, follows established procedures, and takes ownership of assigned tasks.
Example: An officer carefully verifies transaction details and documents before completing a process, reducing the possibility of avoidable errors.
3. Extraversion
Extraversion describes the extent to which a person is outgoing, socially confident, and comfortable interacting with others. Probationary Officers regularly communicate with customers, colleagues, senior officials, and other stakeholders. Clear communication and an approachable attitude can help officers explain banking services, understand customer concerns, and coordinate with their teams. However, being effective in a customer-facing role does not mean a person must always be highly outgoing. Calm, clear, and respectful communication is equally valuable.
Example: An officer confidently explains the features of a banking product to a customer and responds to questions in a clear and professional manner.
4. Agreeableness
Agreeableness reflects cooperation, consideration, empathy, and a willingness to work constructively with others. Banking professionals often deal with customers who have different needs, expectations, and levels of financial awareness. An agreeable working style can support teamwork, effective listening, and respectful customer interactions. At the same time, officers must balance cooperation with the need to follow banking rules and established procedures.
Example: A customer is upset about a transaction issue. The officer listens patiently, acknowledges the concern, and explains the appropriate steps to resolve it.
5. Emotional Stability
Emotional stability refers to a person’s ability to remain composed and manage emotional responses during stressful or challenging situations. It is often discussed as the opposite end of the personality dimension known as Neuroticism. A Probationary Officer may encounter demanding workloads, customer complaints, deadlines, and unexpected operational challenges. Remaining calm can help an officer assess a situation carefully and make considered decisions.
Example: When several tasks require attention at the same time, an officer prioritises them systematically instead of panicking or reacting impulsively.
Why Do These Personality Traits Matter in Banking?
A Probationary Officer’s responsibilities extend beyond completing transactions or meeting performance targets. Officers must maintain professional relationships, work with colleagues, communicate with customers, and follow established banking procedures.
The five personality traits provide a useful framework for understanding different aspects of workplace behaviour.
Adaptability: Openness to Experience can help officers remain receptive to new systems, procedures, and ideas.
Accuracy and responsibility: Conscientiousness supports careful handling of financial transactions, documentation, and confidential information.
Communication: Extraversion relates to social confidence and comfort in professional interactions.
Teamwork and customer service: Agreeableness supports cooperation, empathy, and respectful communication.
Stress management: Emotional Stability relates to maintaining composure and making considered decisions under pressure.
How to Prepare for the SBI PO Psychometric Test 2026
Although a personality assessment cannot be prepared for in exactly the same way as a reasoning or quantitative aptitude paper, candidates can take practical steps to become familiar with the format and approach it confidently.
Understand the Purpose of the Assessment : Familiarise yourself with the purpose of a psychometric test and the behavioural areas it may explore. Understanding concepts such as teamwork, adaptability, responsibility, communication, and stress management can help you interpret questions more comfortably.
Answer Honestly : Respond according to your genuine behaviour and preferences. Trying to portray a completely different personality may lead to inconsistent responses, particularly when similar situations are presented in different ways.
Maintain Consistency : Read each question carefully and answer on the same basis throughout the assessment. Consistency does not mean selecting the same type of response for every question; it means answering thoughtfully and truthfully.
Reflect on Real-Life Situations : Think about how you typically respond to deadlines, disagreements, teamwork, unexpected changes, and difficult conversations. Reflecting on real experiences can help you understand your natural working style.
Practise With Sample Questions : Sample personality questionnaires can help you become familiar with common question formats. Use them to understand how questions are framed rather than memorising answers or attempting to imitate a supposed ideal personality profile.
Read the Official Instructions : Check the Phase III call letter for the test schedule, reporting time, permitted items, required documents, and any specific instructions issued by SBI. Prepare for the group exercise and personal interview alongside the psychometric assessment.
