Ages And Ratio Concept For IBPS RRB Prelims 2020 Preparation
Ratio is defined as the comparison of two quantities by the process of division method between two numbers. Age is a concept where we can apply the concept of ratio to simplify our question and to complete it in less time. Ratio is a concept that can be applied in any topic and in this space we will be learning the application of ratio on the questions of Ages.
Before diving in the topic of ages, let’s understand the basic of Ratio first. Ratio basically tells the relationship between two quantities. For e.g A/B signify that there is a certain relationship between them. This relationship can be used for comparison as well. If we say that A is twice as older than B, we can simply write is as A/B=2/1. Both of them means the same. Coming back to the concept of “Ages”. This is a topic where we can easily apply the concept of ratio. Let’s understand it better with some examples and their explanation.

Q1. The average age of the mother and her three children is 19. The average age reduced to 10 years if the age of mother is excluded. How old is mother?
(a) 32 years
(b) 40 years
(c) 38 years
(d) 42 years
(e) 46 years
Ans- Average of mother and her three children=𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑟 3 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑛/4
Sum of age of mother and her three children=19× 4 = 76 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠
Similarly, sum of her three children= 3× 10 = 30 years
Q2. Twenty years ago, the age of father and his son in the ratio of 8:3. Presently, the father is only 127th times of his son then find out the present age of son?
(a) 28 years
(b) 32 years
(c) 35 years
(d) 21 years
(e) none of these
Ans- Let the present age of son =7𝑥
Then the present age of father=12/7× 7𝑥=12𝑥
𝑥 = 5
Present age of son =7𝑥=7× 5 = 35 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠
Q3. The present age of A and B in the ratio 7:12. 20 years ago, the age difference between Aand B was 15 years. Then find out the sum of present ages of A and B?
(a) 57 years
(b) 53 years
(c) 76 years
(d) 38 years
(e) 45 years
S3. Ans (a)
Sol.Let present age of A =7𝑥 years
And present age of B =12𝑥 years
Age difference always remains same
12𝑥 − 7𝑥 = 15
𝑥 = 3
So, sum of present age of A and B =7𝑥 + 12𝑥 = 19𝑥 = 19 × 3 = 57 years
Q4. 8 years ago, the ratio of the ages of Rachana and Archana was 4 : 3. If the ratio of their present ages is 6 : 5 respectively, what is the ratio of the sum and difference of their present ages?
(a) 11 : 2
(b) 11 : 4
(c) 11 : 1
(d) 11 : 3
(e) None of these
Sol. Rachana′s age/Archana′s age=6x/5x
8 years ago the ratio of their age =4/3
20𝑥 − 32 = 18𝑥 − 24
2𝑥 = 8
𝑥 = 4
Rachana’s age = 24 years
Archana’s age = 20 years
Required ratio = 44/4=11/1
