National Voter Day 2020: Celebrating India’s 10th National Voter Day on 25th January

India is all set to celebrate 10th National Voter’s Day. National Voter’s Day is celebrated since 2011 on January 25, all across the country at over 1 lakh locations to make the youth aware of voting rights. It is the right of every responsible citizen as each vote decides the fate of our nation’s democracy.

National Voter’s Day Theme 2020

The theme for National Voter’s Day 2020 is ‘Electoral Literacy for Stronger Democracy’. The theme sets the wheel in motion for year-long activities which will focus on awareness among the voter’s and renewal of citizens’ faith in the electoral process.

Background

The Voter’s Day celebration was initiated by the then President Pratibha Devi Patil in 2011 on 61st Foundation Day of Election Commission of India (EIC). EIC was established in 1950, as an organization that aims to enhance voters participation in the elections.

About Election Commission of India (EIC)

The Election Commission of India is an constitutional autonomous authority responsible for administering election procedure in India at national, state and district level. It works under Article 324 of the Constitution and subsequently enacted RPA (Representation of the People Act). It is also the supreme body during the by elections and perform different functions during election in our nation ranging from conduction, regulation, inspection, some times even taking judicial decision for breaking code of conduct.

National Voter’s Day 2020

This day is celebrated so that, a voter don’t forget to realize his right and duties toward the nation.

This occasion will be graced by Chief Election Commissioners and delegates from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, Srilanka and Tunisia, who are coming to New Delhi to attend the 10th Annual Meeting of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA).

A-WEB, IFES and International IDEA, reputed international organizations working in elections will also be a part of the occasion. Besides Diplomats from various countries, Members of Political Parties, Members of Parliament and national and international organizations representatives working in the area of democracy and elections are expected to attend this national function.

This year like earlier, National Awards shall be conferred on District and State level Officers for their outstanding performance in the conduct of elections in different spheres like IT initiatives, Security Management, Election Management and contribution in the field of voter awareness and outreach for the Best Electoral Practices.
