About NCSK

  • The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) was established to investigate the conditions of Safai Karamcharis in India and make recommendations to the Government.
  • It is currently a non-statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • The NCSK was originally established in 1993 under the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Act, 1993, initially for a period up to 31 March 1997.
  • It was initially a statutory body, and the validity of the Act was subsequently extended up to 2002 and then 2004.
  • The NCSK Act ceased to have effect from 29 February 2004.
  • Since then, the Commission has continued as a non-statutory body, with its tenure being extended from time to time through government resolutions.
